We know that God's salvation is a free gift. But it doesn't come without cost. Jesus taught that, if we're to follow him, we must renounce all else. If we're to be his disciple, we must count the cost; we must see if this is a price we're able to pay. Scripture tells us that Jesus is the only way of salvation. But many people have trouble accepting this. They have trouble accepting that so many people will go to hell because they don't know Jesus. It's easy to get frustrated in ministry. This is especially true when people seem unresponsive or even hostile to the gospel. In our society, it's politically incorrect to try to convert someone to the Christian faith. We're supposed to acknowledge that all beliefs and practices are good and valid. He was innocent because he'd declared to them the full counsel of God. If they strayed from the Lord, their blood would be on their own head. Tolerance has become the greatest virtue of our day. And because of this, when someone we care about falls into sin, we say nothing. We think that tolerating their choices is the loving thing to do. Most people today entrust the education of their children exclusively to others. They have little, if any, involvement in it. We've all been provoked at one time or another. Someone has said something or done something and we felt that we just had to respond. In Acts 17 we read about a time when the apostle Paul was provoked. He was so provoked by all the idols in Athens that he had to do something. Jesus tells us that our heart will be wherever our treasure is. Even though most of us say we love the Lord more than everything else, our heart reveals something much different. Most people in our society today think they'll go to heaven when they die. They think they'll go there because they believe they've lived a pretty good life. People today will not tolerate conviction.
