Today, I have our Holy Week and Easter messages. On Maundy Thursday we talked about the Lord's Supper, why it continues to be practiced today, and why it's so meaningful for believers in Jesus. It can be heard at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryBrokenForYou
On Good Friday, we talked about the meaning of this day. We saw that it's a day of mourning because we remember Jesus' death and our role in his suffering. But we also saw that it's also a day of rejoicing. Without Good Friday, with the willing sacrifice of Jesus, we wouldn't have the hope we receive on Easter. It can be heard at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryGivenForYou
On Easter we reflected on the importance of the resurrection. Many people say that, even if Jesus was just a man, even if he didn't rise from the dead, the Christian faith would remain intact; they say that at the core of our faith is the call to love one another. While this is important, the Christian faith truly hangs on Jesus and his resurrection. Had he not risen from the grave, we would remain in our sin and we'd remain without hope. We concluded the series, "Our Father Abraham", with a message titled "A Man of Legacy." As Abraham got older, he wanted to find a wife for his son, Isaac. However, he didn't want Isaac marrying a woman of Canaan. He didn't want this because the women of that land worshipped other gods and might pull his son away from the Lord. So he sent his servant to his homeland, to his own family, to find him a wife. In this way, Abraham sought to protect his son and to leave a legacy of faith behind him. In the same way, as believers in Jesus, we too should be men and women of legacy; we should desire to leave a legacy of faith behind us when our time in this world comes to an end. Last night, we finished our Lenten series, "Words from the Cross." Our message focused on the last words Jesus spoke prior to his death, the word os committal. Before dying, Jesus committed his spirit into the hands of the Father. Like Jesus, we too must commit ourselves into God's care because we have no control over death or the life after. And with Jesus' sacrifice, we also know that, when we die, we will be welcomed into his loving arms. In our message this Sunday, we saw Abraham obey God's command to sacrifice his son as a burnt offering. God stopped him at the last moment, but we see in this that Abraham was a man of extraordinary faith. He was willing to obey God and trust his promise no matter what. This is a faith we all need as we face decisions about whether to obey Christ or disobey, believe him or disbelieve. You can hear it at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryAManofFaith

In the series we've been hearing on Wednesday evenings, we come to one of Jesus' final words spoken from the cross. Prior to his death, he declared that it is finished. When he said this, he was saying that his work of redemption was complete and that the penalty of our sins had been paid. There's no more that needs to be done; there's no more that can be done. In our series, "Our Father Abraham," we see that God confirmed his promise to Abraham. He also added that he would have a son with Sarah and that this would be the child through whom he'd establish his covenant. Instead of doubting God, instead of trying to do it his own way, Abraham believed God in a spirit of amazement. In the same way, we too need to trust God even when his promises seem unrealistic. On Wednesday night, in our series "Words from the Cross", we looked at the word of desolation. While hanging on the cross, Jesus asked God why he had forsaken him. When we look at what Jesus was enduring, along with the testimony of Scripture, we find that he was truly experiencing the judgment of God. In this message we look at why this was the case and what it means for us. You can hear this message at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryTheWordofDesolation

In our series "Our Father Abraham" we see this week that Abraham was a man of mercy. When God discussed with him the destruction of Sodom, Abraham interceded for the righteous of the city. He didn't want to see them suffer the same fate as the wicked. We, in the church today, need to have this same heart. We too should go to God pleading for the salvation of his people in a world that is facing his judgment. This message can be heard at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryAManofMercy

During our Lenten service last night, we looked at another word of Jesus from the cross. We see that Jesus, as he was dying, was concerned about his mother's welfare and provision in this world, and he provided for that. In the same way, he's also concerned not only about our salvation, but also about our needs in this life. This message can be heard at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryTheWordofConcern

This Sunday, we looked at another failure of Abraham and what we can learn from it. We see that, because of their outward circumstances, Abram and Sarai tried to fulfill God's promise their own way. We often do the same thing. But God doesn't need our wisdom or insight to determine the best way to accomplish his purpose. God is able to do everything he's promised and he's faithful to his Word. Sunday, we were forced to cancel church do to bad weather. However, on Wednesday night we continued our series "Words from the Cross" with a message titled "The Word of Assurance." As Jesus hung on the cross, he gave the assurance of salvation to one of the thieves who were hanging next to him. We find, as we seach the Scriptures, that God gives the same assurance to each one of us who look to Jesus and trust in him. And because of this, we no longer have to fear death or the judgment of God. You can hear it or download it at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryTheWordofAssurance

Throughout Lent, we're having Wednesday evening worship services. We'll be focusing during this time on the words of Jesus spoken from the cross. The word that we considered this week is the word of forgiveness. Even during his tremendous suffering, Jesus prayed for his persecutors, asking that they might be forgiven. This is a great encouragement to us because, if Jesus desired their forgiveness, it also assures us that he desires ours as well. It also serves as an example for us to seek the forgiveness of all people, even those who hate us and cause us to suffer. In our third message of the series, "Our Father Abraham" we learn that the father of the faithful was a man of peace. In Genesis 13 we see that he was willing to give his nephew the first choice of land, and the best land, for the sake of peace. God also desires for us, as his children, to live in peace with one another. But are we, like Abraham, willing to sacrifice things of value, things of importance, to maintain peace? Yesterday, we continued our series on Abraham with a message based on Genesis 12:10-20. In this message we looked at an act of great selfishness on the part of Abraham and how we're called, as believers, to generosity, selflessness, and humility. We also saw how this sin committed by Abraham was rooted in a lack of trust in the promises of God and how the same thing is often true of us. This week, we started an eight week series that will continue on Sunday's up until Holy Week. The title of this series is "Our Father Abraham." In it, we'll look at Abraham, the father of the faithful, and see what we can learn from him to apply to our own walk of faith.
This week's message is based on Genesis 12:1-9. In it we see that Abraham, because of his great faith, was a man of sacrifice. And as the faithful of God, we too must be men and women of sacrifice. It can be heard at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryAManofSacrifice

The hymn "Amazing Grace" is one of the most widely known and most loved hymns of the church. But even though we sing of God's amazing grace, few people today are truly amazed by it. So many of us continue to depend on works or our own goodness to earn God's salvation and as a method to judge the worthiness of others for God's blessings. In Matthew 20:1-16, Jesus tells a parable that reveals to us the true nature of God's grace and why we frequently live in resentment of it. Even though most believers say that God's Word is important, so many seem bored by its message and indifferent to what it says. In this message based on Hebrews 2:1-3, we see that this attitude can lead to disastrous consequences. It can be heard at http://www.archive.org/details/KentSperryPayAttention

Because God's Word can be challenging, because it can make us uncomfortable, many people search for answers and guidance from other sources. People turn to other religions and to occult practices. What does God have to say about this? This week's message, based on Isaiah 8:20-22 looks at this question. This week's message looked at the fact that, even though so many people claim to have a high regard for the Word of God, they're so quick to dismiss it. If we really desire God's guidance, if we really want his blessing, then why would we ignore what he says to us? In this message based on John 2:1-11 we see that, without listening to the Word of God, without following him, we cannot receive the blessing of the Lord; we must do whatever he says. In this week's message we looked at the 12 year old Jesus. As the Son of God, it was only natural for him to be around the things of God. In fact, his whole life revolved around God. It was his heart's desire. But is it our's? So many people, even in the church today, seem to want nothing to do with God.
